Here, counterfeiters are punished, and this portrait reflects the agony of a soul marked by the scars of deceit and sin. With his gaunt face and hollow eyes, the alchemist conveys the despair and hardship of those who, due to their greed and deceitfulness, face endless damnation. The work uses dark, harrowing tones to emphasize the brutality of this punishment.
